Veg Club: Plant-Based Information

Created and served as a faculty advisor for Veg Club, a plant-based information club and registered Student Life organization on the Central Campus of Broward College, from 2019-2021.
Many students on the leadership executive board of Veg Club were high school students in the dual enrollment College Academy program.
The club's mission was to promote plant-based information literacy by sharing ideas, discussing stories, exchanging information, and learning as a veggie community.
The purpose of the student life organization was to learn how to research trustworthy information better, interpret data quicker, and evaluate sources to use health information resources more efficiently for optimum health.

A PLANT-BASED DIET AND ITS ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT
An example showcasing the club’s research and presentation skills is the student-led plant-based information literacy session at the 2021 Literary Festival at Broward College, which coincided with Earth Day (April 22).
Students serving in various roles on the executive board of Veg Club created and presented an hour-long research-based informational seminar on A Plant-Based Diet and its Environmental Impact.
The event, comprised of a plant-based information literacy seminar, quiz, and discussion moderated by the faculty advisor, was open to all students, faculty, and staff on all campuses of Broward College through an online modality. All presenters received a certificate of appreciation from the Outreach Librarian. The presentation was recorded and is available online on the club’s library LibGuide.

I created Come Out Through as a service learning project designed to strengthen the LGBTQ+ community through the art of storytelling, while studying Arts in Community Engagement in The Graduate School at Florida State University
Come Out Through Art has a mission to provide Tallahassee residents with a welcoming and enjoyable platform that encourages community engagement through the arts.
The Mickee Faust Club is the perfect communal public forum for this celebration of public pride. A nontraditional and culturally diverse gathering place, The Mickee Faust Club stands tall and proud as a leading arts institution, furthering community engagement by providing Tallahassee’s thriving LGBTQ+ community with an exciting performing arts clubhouse. We want you to be involved.
For Come Out Through Art, I initiated a strategic marketing plan designed to engage both the online and local LGBTQ+ community, including businesses, markets, university groups, and non-profit civic organizations.
Along with collaborative assistance from co-producers at Mickee Faust, I developed mutually beneficial relationships with New Leaf Market Co-op, a local health foods store, which agreed to participate by distributing promotional coupons.
The Family Tree Community Center, Florida LGBTA Democratic Caucus, and PFLAG, participated in the event through banner placement, public speaking, and community engagement. Pride Student Union, the LGBTQ+ organization at Florida State University, helped spread the word about the event to the college community.
Social media accounts helped MF digitally engage with the local community. Facebook and Instagram were friendly and approachable introductory tools, which helped to introduce this safe evening of community participation, galvanizing new audience members from within the community.
In addition to local marketing, WTXL Television helped promote the event and advance the social justice issue of equality by conducting a live on-air interview with MF members.
True to its mission of providing a voice for the voiceless, specifically the under-served and overlooked, Come Out Through Art provided an unforgettable evening of engagement. Through the art of storytelling, close to 70 performers, organizers, and audience members sparked new connections, initiated civic dialogue, and helped strengthen and unify Tallahassee’s robust LGBTQ+ community at The Mickee Faust Club.

I created Coming Out Through Art as library outreach program with BC Pride for National Coming Out Week (’19) at University/College Library. In addition to making the graphics and writing the press release for this storytelling celebration, I hosted the free shared-experience program at Broward College Libraries, which was open to all students, faculty, and staff across Broward College.
